Currently, the oil industry uses for its offshore oil and gas production mainly power supply plants situated on offshore platforms in order to drive submarine electrical equipment, e.g. compressors and pumps. The oil industry plans, however, to extend the production of oil and gas to larger water depths as well as to areas in the North Atlantic that are covered with ice most of the year.
“ Alternatives to surface tech-
nology for power generation ”
Moving the production to such Northern regions means that it will not be possible to use surface technology for power generation as the sea is frozen. At the same time, it is not possible to supply power via offshore oil-drilling rigs as the target areas are located hundreds of miles offshore, with waters as deep as 10,000 ft.
energynautics supports the oil industry in searching for, and testing technologies – among others, renewable power generation and innovative power supply – that might become feasible power supply options under such circumstances.
